What is Children’s Liturgy of the Word?

Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a time of prayer and reflection on God’s Word presented with child-friendly language. 

Who can attend? 

All children in Pre-K through second grade are welcome to Children’s Liturgy of the Word (no registration needed), and parents are also welcome to accompany a younger child or one that needs help transitioning into attending.

When is it offered?
During the 10:00 a.m. Mass every Sunday except when we have Baptisms (usually the third Sunday of the month) or special feast days.

How does it work?
Children are dismissed from mass before the First Reading. They rejoin their families for the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Procedures for Leading the Word:

1. Sign Up Genius is sent out to all volunteers beginning each semester.
2. Before your scheduled mass, read through the Gospel that week and prepare your lesson (ask questions to make sure they understood and get them thinking about it). 
3. At Mass, the priest/deacon will announce the Children’s Liturgy. Walk to the front of the sanctuary, and children will follow you (The First Sacraments Coordinator will be at the end of the line).
4. Welcome the children and introduce yourself as today’s “Leader of the Word.”
5. Read the Gospel from the Lectionary for Children and the presentation/discussion you have prepared. 
6. Sing the Creed and lead Prayers of the Faithful (you will be provided with music slides to help with this step).
7. Dismiss with a coloring sheet and lead the children back into the sanctuary.
